Zelfzachtig

Bar Buka is a lesbian bar in Amsterdam that often shows work by queer artists in their bar, rotating these every two months. Zelfzachtig is a photo-series in which I artistically explore both the painful and beautiful parts of growing up as a (queer) woman. For me, these works were about embracing parts of yourself that can be harder to love at times.

PANNDORA is Utrecht’s biggest queer festival, organised yearly by stichting PANN. This edition took place in Moreelsepark, where they created an outside exhibition space for the selected artists to show their work. My project, a photography and poetry series on body positivity and self-love, was printed on a big canvas and shown at the festival entrance alongside the work of five other artists.

My graduation work ‘Dicht Op De Huid’ was selected to be shown in ‘Whose Is The World?’, an exhibition exploring the relation between art and activism. ‘Dicht Op De Huid’ is a twenty-one minute long spoken word film about sexual abuse, in which I narrate the story of several people I talked to about their experiences on this topic. The film was shown in an installation with multiple screens and sound-showers. I was the youngest artist to exhibit my work here, alongsides some of my former teachers and other well-known people in the design world. Naturally, it was a very exciting project for me :)

Since we graduated during times of COVID-19, HKU could not give us a space to physically display our graduation work. Of course, after four years of hard work, we did not want our projects to be shown solely online. Me and four other classmates therefore decided to organise and curate a last- minute physical exhibition together at analog printstudio (and occasional club) Kapitaal.
